Description
Τσεμπέρι, σταμπάτο μαντίλι από ζαχαρί τουλπάνι, τσιπίδι, φερμένο από την Αγγλία, που χρησιμοποιείται ως κεφαλοκάλυμμα. Παλαιότερα αποτελούσε εξωτερικό μαντίλι ενός πιο πολύπλοκου κεφαλοκαλύμματος. Τα άσπρα τσεμπέρια τα φορούσαν οι ελεύθερες όταν πήγαιναν στην εκκλησία, στον περίπατο ή στο πανηγύρι. Ακόμη τα φορούσαν και οι παντρεμένες, όσο ακόμη ήταν νέες και ήταν οι άντρες τους στο νησί. Επίσης, τα τσεμπέρια στόλιζαν την εικόνα της Παναγίας στις γιορτές. Ανάλογα με το δέσιμο της ρέντας (άκρη) και τις κόκχες (τσακίσεις), η Καλυμνιά δείχνει την καλαισθησία αλλά και τη διάθεσή της. Ο διάκοσμος του μαντιλιού είναι φυτικός: μεγάλη μπορντούρα, πλουμιά με πολύχρωμα λουλούδια και φύλλα ολόγυρα και εσωτερικά αυτής δυο ειδών φυτικά μοτίβα, αντικρυστά: μια μεγάλη γλάστρα με λουλούδια και ψηλά κλαδιά με φύλλα
και ένα στεφανάκι από λουλούδια. Οι παντρεμένες δίπλωναν έτσι το τσεμπέρι ώστε να φαίνεται το στεφανάκι ενώ οι ελεύθερες φρόντιζαν να φαίνεται το άλλο μοτίβο.
