To Kalymnos, the lovely island of the sponge divers, these two records are dedicated.
A great part of the rich musical tradition of the island has been lost, but an important part still remains alive on the lips and in the hearts of the Kalymnians. These recordings were made in an attempt to preserve what is left. We have sought to include, in the limited space and time afforded by these records, every type of Kalymnian musical lore. From the many-versed border songs, the work songs, religious and children’s songs, lullabies, weddings songs, love and teasing couplets, to the heart-rending kalymnian lament, every kind is represented by one or more pieces.
The recording was made with the cooperation of the Kalymnos Lyceum Club of Greek Women. The Central Lyceum wishes to express its warmest thanks to its Kalymnos Annex, without the invaluable help of which this edition would not have been made possible.
