Songs and Dances of Alatsata and Erythraea, Asia Minor
1 CD & Printed edition

This record is dedicated to the songs and dances of the Greeks of Asia Minor and to those of the small but lively town of Alatsata, in Erythraea.

Asia Minor and its Greek population which flourished there for centuries, constitute already, for the younger generation, a distant and legendary world. Those who were part of it, however, find it almost impossible to believe that that world is gone forever. The old-timers still recount wonderfull stories about their native towns and villages, and they also vividly recall the tragic events which followed the Great Debacle of 1922.

And, along with the other traditions which the various dynamic and dedicated groups and associations endeavour to preserve by studying and recording them in books and other important publications, the traditional songs and dances of Anatolia are also kept alive by the Greeks from Asia Minor, who continue to sing and dance to the tunes of the lost Homeland. In doing so, the sorrows of the exile seem to become less bitter, while, at the same time, the younger generations are drawn closer to the happy past and to the ancestors who created it.

Among those who have strengthened this bond and who still cultivate the love of the younger generation for the musical culture of Erythraea is Cleonike Tzoanaki, whose songs are living samples of a rich and important musical tradition which must not be lost. Her own devotion, as well as that of all those who have sung and played for this recording, and without whose contribution its realization would not have been possible, quite obviously pervades their performance. To her, and to them all: Costas Kounelas, Maria Tzoanaki, Pandelis Politakis and Vasso Georgatzi, go our warmest thanks.

This collection of songs and dances of Alatsata, Erythraea, which make up the latest record in the series “Folk Music - Dances - Songs”, produced by the Lyceum Club of Greek Women, is intended to fill a void, at least partly. We hope to be able, in the near future, to complete the picture by presenting more traditional songs and dances of the Greek of Asia Minor, as a small tribute to a community which cannot and will not forget its cultural roots.
